One of a new batch of four Furby Gurdies. This model allows you to program your own rhythms by rearranging screws inserted into the four wheels.There is also a ‘trigger out’ socket, which has been used in the last section of the video to operate an old sequencer and synthesiser.More details here:nervoussquirrel.com/circuitbent27.html

This was a commission for Chris Wing (www.winganimation.com) who lives in San Francisco and writes cool dub tracks.I have only used six patch combinations in the video, but there are literally thousands to explore.The box has MIDI in and out, and a switch to route the drum machine’s audio signal through a ‘voice modulator’ section, which has pitch and LFO controls.Apologies for the inferior drum programming – I’m looking forward to hearing Chris do it justice!

This box basically consists of three sections:A modified Musini, which is a baby toy originally intended to get toddlers dancing around the living room. A sensor detects floor vibrations and matches the tempo accordingly, or as the manufacturer puts it:”Musini’s patented MusicSensor detects their every move and translates it into a totally unique musical response, teaching cause and effect.”New knobs and switches have been added to create strange new sounds that would probably frighten the previous small owner of the toy.The second section is a simple lo-fi sampler that can record up to 20 seconds of audio, either as one long sound or four shorter ones. The sounds can then be looped and the pitch altered.The third section is a modified Early Learning Centre ‘animal piano’, which can be used to create blips, crunches and bleeps which contrast nicely with the mellow sweeping sounds of the Musini. This section could also be useful for communicating with a pet dog, cat or bird.The box was commissioned by Norman Fairbanks (www.normanfairbanks.com), after a few e-mails discussing the types of sounds he was looking for. There should be some higher-quality audio samples on my website at some point, and Norman is planning on creating some new music with the box, which is exciting.Please get in touch if you have a project in mind!

Each furby has 4 controls: mute, crash, loop and reset. The handle turns 8 cams which operate corresponding microswitches to create interesting rhythmic patterns. Part of the ‘setting up’ section at the beginning has been fast forwarded. Please commission me to make lots more of these machines!

This was made for Colin Cloughley, creator of fine industrial techno.Knobs, L-R: keyboard filter mode select (LP, BP, HP), cutoff, resonance, LED sensitivity, instrument pitch, drum pitch.Sockets L-R: filter control voltage in, external lowpass in, bandpass in, highpass in, keyboard out, keyboard out via filter.The switches in the centre connect the circuit bent modifications.The video contains sounds generated by the SK-5 alone, except for the very last clip where the filter is being modulated by an external LFO.The filter was made from Ken Stone’s Synthacon VCF schematic. As part of the January 2009 celebrations for the London Sinfonietta and Guardian Newspaper moving headquarters to Kings Place, Patrick Furness and I were asked to create an installation that would deliver music to people in the cafe area of the atrium. We responded by creating 100 audio ‘newspapers’, each containing super-thin cutting edge circuitry that could play back 20 seconds of audio when a certain area of the paper was pressed.The music included in the newspapers was created by sound artist Duncan Chapman, who worked with members of the London Sinfonietta and the Copenhagen Youth Project, along with poet Kenny Baraka.More details here:www.nervoussquirrel.com/newsound.htmlwww.londonsinfonietta.org.uk/project/art-news
