This is my Animated Short, featured in the Art of Digital Show 2007 in San Diego, The T-10 Festival in Oakland, Smogdance in Pomona, etc. The concept of this piece is to be simultaneously a VJ set and a character based short film. The story concerns Mr. Manley Cubicle and his descent into madness. It is an audio/visual parody, or tribute to the music and videos of the 1980′s, and a satire of the lifestyle of the new century – certainly the subjects of information overload and corporate dehumanization have never been more relevant than now. “Do Itashimashite, Mr. Cubicle.”

I’m Franz.K – I play my beatbox guitar style and add the IDM rhythms. This is “Augmented Demented” (the 1st track on the last CD “Every 11 Seconds” on 5RC) one of our favorites to begin a show. Here is my VJ mix for track 33. I like the alternation between mystery ambience, loud beats and harsh noise in this one in particular. This is a live VJ mix recorded directly onto DVD – I’m proud to say it was done on the first take! (There is a Fibre Optics 1, I’m now selecting which take is the best one to show you.) If I had my wish, this would be projected with holographic lasers, into a cloud of plasma above the audience!

This is a track from a future Vinyl / CD comp on Peloton Musique, where most sounds are recorded bicycle noises! See their website for details. The visuals were a wintery live VJ mix I made (on the second take!) for the occasion. I admit this is a weird and somewhat creepy sounding song, but it takes more than Pop-40 to make the sonic world go round! Dare to try something different, and you might just innovate.

As part of the Envisioning the Future show, curated by Judie Chicago in the Pomona Arts Colony, opening January 2004, I made this animation, which was part of an installation in the LAM (Latino Art Museum), then located in Claremont. It is featured on the 3 disk commemorative DVD set of the exhibit. The sound track is “Koto Lyra” and “Celestial Motor”, ambient tracks I wrote in 1998. Since then, I have used this footage in many different types of VJ events!

I VJ’ed at the “Geobiotic” show at Zero-Point in LA. These guys were one of the acts that I projected with. I like this video, it’s very striking, only white and red emerging from pure darkness.

This is a LIVE VJ mix – you can see my hands operating the Kaoss Pad and V4! (There is also an unseen PowerBook, trigger finger and camcorder.) I thought this glitchy style would be the perfect illustration of the bipolar song – you can almost hear the spontaneous combustion of the analogue circuits! Have come from SF, am now seeking VJ projection gigs in the LA area! (I’m also in the experimental band AFC) Trent – please give me the chance to VJ with NIN! (This is the original mix of Fibre Optics. The more sedate alternate version was posted last week. Another completely different video is being planned…)

I’m not really a “madman”, but I wanted to follow an authentic process! 1. Listening to the music on infinite loop, I drew many abstract pages. 2. I glued them together with sticks into an unstable 3d sculpture. 3. I then burned it to ash. 4. I made another one, and did the same. By then, it was nearly dawn. 5. In following nights, I sped up and edited the footage of all of this into the video you just saw. Thank you for watching.
